Osteoporosis, Vitamin D & Calcium

According to research, The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) estimates that there are approximately 3 million people currently living in the UK who have Osteoporosis – a disease which causes bones to become brittle and painful and prone to breakages. Moreover, the NOS reports that there are 300,000 bone fractures every year in the UK, which equates to approximately one breakage every two minutes. With these statistics in mind, it is important to look at how we can promote/ strengthen bone health.

So, what can be done to help maintain strong bones?

Vitamin D and Calcium as a source to healthy bones:

If you have been diagnosed with Osteoporosis, you may have been prescribed Vitamin D and Calcium by your health practitioner.

Consuming Vitamin D is important in order to in maintain healthy bones, as it allows the body to absorb calcium efficiently. Calcium is what the body used to build bones and maintain them, and is also used to regulate blood clotting, teeth and muscle contractions. Increasing your intake of these can therefore be helpful for those suffering from fragile bones as a result of Osteoporosis, as they encourage stronger bone development.

Increasing your Vitamin D intake:

According to information published by the NHS, those living within the UK may not obtain Vitamin D between the months of October-March from natural sunlight, as the sun is too weak for us to create the vitamin.

So, what other ways can we ensure we are receiving enough of this vitamin if we cannot obtain it in this way?

Aside from consuming Calcium and Vitamin D supplements, incorporating Vitamin D-rich foods into our diet is another way of increasing our intake to aid bone health. Eating oily fish, such as mackerel, salmon, sardines, tuna and herring can increase our intake as they are a good source of the vitamin. Red meat, egg yolks, liver and some fortified cereals and fat spreads can also increase our intake of the vitamin.
