Vitamin D, what do patients say about it?
April 2, 2018

Vitamin D is created by our bodies when exposed to sunlight, did you know that?

Once the cold and grey settles in for the Winter months, we can’t help but feel blue. However, the lack of sunlight might have more of an effect on your health than you realize. Indeed, our bodies create Vitamin D when exposed to sunlight. Vitamin D is important for our well-being as it controls the amount of calcium and phosphate, which in turn are important for our bones, teeth and muscles. There are certain conditions were taking Vitamin D supplements is recommended:

  • Crohn’s disease
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Celiac disease
  • Osteoporosis

People eating an exclusively vegan diet are recommended to take Vitamin D supplements as many dietary sources of Vitamin D are animal produce (such as fish, red meat or egg yolk). There are very little side effects mentioned, but some people do mention nausea or abdominal bloating. It is important to note that taking your Vitamin D supplement with a meal rich in fat helps its absorption. Some people are more comfortable setting up reminders on their phone to remember to take their supplement. This is when Medsmart® can be useful. Medsmart® can provide you with plenty of information about the ingredients about over the counter medications and supplements like Vitamin D. It’s as easy as scanning the barcode of the medicine you wish to take!
