Lost or Stolen Medicine on Holiday – What to Do
July 24, 2018

Having lost or stolen medicine on holiday can be worrying. To help you stay protected, here’s a few steps you can take to reduce the chances of medicines being lost or stolen when abroad:

1. Only Take What You Need

Going out? Before heading off, plan what medicine you will need for the time you will be away for and only take what you need. Leave any medicines you don’t need for the time stored in a safe and secure place in your accommodation.

2. Report Lost or Stolen Medicine

Make sure to report any theft or loss to the local law enforcement if it happens. Most insurance companies will ask to see a police report before reimbursing you. You will need to get this from them before claiming.

3. Contact Your Travel Insurance Company

If you have travel insurance, your insurers should be able to advise you of the best way to get more of your medicine, either from a hospital or a local pharmacy. Before going on your trip, make sure to take a note of your insurance company’s contact details and policy number, in case you can’t access this information whilst away.

4. Bring a Medicine List

Bring a list of all the medicines when you travel. This can be helpful if you need to let someone know what medicines you’re taking. For example, a foreign doctor, pharmacist or anyone else helping you get medicine replacements.

Storing your medicines on Medsmart® can be helpful, as it means you will have your medicine list on your phone. If you’d prefer to take a paper copy, you can create a print-out copy of all medicines you have stored on Medsmart®, through the ‘Share’ button.

And another thing…

Make sure to check that your phone works abroad! Aside from posting holiday snaps, having a working phone is also important in the event of lost meds or any other emergencies.

Before setting off, it’s worth double checking with your provider that it works abroad, in case you need to contact someone whilst your away (e.g. your doctor, family, insurance company).

From all of us at Medsmart® HQ – we wish you a happy, healthy and safe trip!
