We encourage women to take the time look after themselves – life is busy but investing in your own health is also important, stay on top of taking your own medications as prescribed and visiting health professionals for advice and screening.

Health is a cornerstone in all of our lives. On International Women’s Day it is a chance to reflect on the pharmaceutical industry increasing support in understanding the specifics of women’s health as a new and different area.

Women are the largest demographic and arguably have the most powerful voice in the developed world. We know that women influence 70% of healthcare expenditure. Pharmaceutical Companies increasingly have units/divisions to focus on women’s health and there has been a wave of privately held companies that solely focus on women’s health. They are looking to design products that appeal to women’s different physiology and stages of life. For many women there is a trade-off between taking a therapeutic drug and the possibility of compromising quality of life. The closer we get to the needs and differences the stronger the solutions can be. The scope of female health spans across the life stages from fertility and reproductive conditions to post-menopausal osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, urinary incontinence, and multiple sclerosis. Women can exhibit different symptoms to men for the same disease such as a heart attack. It is reported that when men have a heart attack they exhibit pain in the chest area, which radiates down the arm. Women, on the other hand, may have nausea, jaw pain, or another usual symptom. Understanding the differences between the sexes and their healthcare needs can continue to inspire new solutions. Not so long ago clinical trials were only conducted on men, the assumption was that approved medication would work on everyone in the same way. With eyes to the US the FDA has supported studies to track the participation of women in clinical trials.

Looking ahead with the focus on the lifetime of a woman the industry can continue to provide new & innovative ways to help women live full & healthy lives.
