Medicines

How do I find the barcode on my medicine pack?

The barcode on medicine packages comprises of horizontal bold black lines with numbers below them. It’s important that they have numbers below, otherwise, it is not the barcode that will work on the Medsmart® App.

Sometimes it will be hiding under a dispense label that the pharmacist puts on your medicine pack. If you can’t remove this label but can distinguish the numbers you can enter them manually in the Medsmart App and it will work the same way as the barcode scanner.

My medicine isn't recognised - what do I do?
Please email us at [email protected] with photographs* of your medicine. The photographs need to show:

  • Full medicine name
  • Strength (e.g. 5mg)
  • Medicine Barcode
  • PL number – this will begin with the letters ‘PL’ followed by some numbers (e.g. PL 11/222/11)

(*For your privacy, please hide any personal information from showing in photographs e.g. your name, home address).

Why can't I manually add medicines which aren't recognised?
We don’t allow medicines to be manually added to help make sure you use the right information about your medicine.

Some medicines can have the same name but are made of different ingredients, depending on who makes them.

Making sure you use the correct information is important to us. It allows us to make sure we can correctly flag any potential interactions with other medicine you take, or any allergies you’ve listed.

The information on my medicine packet doesn’t match what Medsmart® is showing?

If you think there’s something wrong with the information you are seeing, please contact us at [email protected]. In your message, please provide full details of your query, medicine name and include contact details which you are happy for us to contact you regarding your query.

How do I add a medicine to my medicine cabinet?
You can add a new medicine to your medicine cabinet by following our step-by-step guide below:

  • Select ‘Add’ (‘+ symbol) located at the bottom of your screen.
  • Select ‘Medicine’ from the fan of options (i.e. health condition, medicine, reminder and allergy/intolerance).
  • Place the barcode scanner over the medicine barcode or enter the barcode number.
  • Check the medicine information is correct and appears the same as on the medicine box.
  • Select who the medicine is for (e.g. ‘you’ or ‘someone else’).
  • Input the birth year, gender and postcode area of the person the medicine is for.
  • Customise your medicine cabinet by adding a custom name to the medicine, the health condition the medicine is for and any allergy information.

Trouble finding the barcode?
The barcode might be located under your pharmacy’s dispensing label. If this is the case, carefully lift the label to access the 13-digit barcode.

What happens if my medication changes?
If you have been prescribed a new medicine by your Healthcare Professional, which replaces an existing medicine you have stored in your medicine cabinet, you can ‘switch’ the medicines by using the delete option in your Medicine Details page.

  • If you are using Medsmart® on an iPhone/iPad, you will find the ‘Options’ button in the lower right-hand corner of the screen.
  • If you are using Medsmart® on an Android device, the ‘Options’ button is in the top right-hand corner, by tapping on the icon with three dots.

Choose the ‘Switching Medicines’ option and scan the barcode of your new medicine to keep your medicine cabinet up-to-date.

What happens if I no longer need to take a medicine?
If you have stopped using a medicine, you can either ‘suspend’ or ‘delete’ your medicine completely from your medicine cabinet, depending on your preference. To find out what action works best for you, please take some time to read over the descriptions below:

  • Suspend = If you suspend a medicine, this will mean its’ information will remain stored in your cabinet. If you start using this medicine again, you can resume using the medication without having to re-scan the medicine box again.
  • Delete = If you choose to delete a medicine, its’ information will be permanently removed from your medicine cabinet. You will no longer be able to see, nor be able to access, information stored for this medicine.
How do I suspend a medicine?
  • Click on the medicine you wish to suspend in your medicine cabinet.
  • Select ‘Suspend’.
  • Enter reason for suspending the medicine and confirm.

I find it difficult remembering the names of my medicines and for what each of them are for. Do you have any tips for helping me remember?
To make it easier to remember, you may wish to customise the name on your medicine to something more familiar to you, through the customise settings.

  • If you are using Medsmart on an iPhone/iPad, simply select your medicine and click ‘Edit Custom Name’ from the options (located on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen).
  • If you are using an Android device, select your medicine then click on the navigation icon (three dots) on the top right-hand corner of the screen. Once you have clicked, select ‘Edit Custom Name’ from the options.

Once you have entered the custom name for your medicine, select ‘Confirm’.

Timeline function in App

The “Reminders” section in the app (second button from the bottom right) is an overview of reminders that you set up. You can go back to previous dates to see when you set up a medication, and you can go forward to see how many remaining days there are left of a medication.

If you select that you have taken a medicine, then it logs that the current day is the day that you have taken it. In the Reminders section of the app you can view the date and time that you are logging the medicine as taken.

It does not matter what date it is at the top bar; it will log today’s medicine as taken (in your Medicine Cabinet). Here I have logged my Medicine as taken on the 21st of May, but you can see that my log shows that I took my medicine today (20th of May).
