• Medsmart makes it easier to take control of your medicines. Manage your medicines by finding and scanning the barcode on the medicine pack, set up smart reminders for when you need to take your medicines and share your medicine cabinet with yourself or others.
  • The app allows you to find trusted information about your medicines and link it to your health condition. Medsmart will log if you have taken your medicines and you can keep a record of that with you at all times.
  • The more information you provide for your profile, medicines and health conditions, the more Medsmart can help you take control of your medicines and your health.

Yes, Medsmart is completely free to download from the App store or Google Play! There are no in-app purchases or hidden charges whilst using the app.

The barcode on medicine packages comprises of horizontal bold black lines with numbers below them. It’s important that they have numbers below, otherwise it is not the barcode that will work on th Medsmart App.

Sometimes it will be hiding under a dispense label that the pharmacist puts on your medicine pack. If you can’t remove this label but can distinguish the numbers you can enter them manually in the Medsmart App and it will work the same way as the barcode scanner.

Please email us at [email protected] with photographs* of your medicine. The photographs need to show:

  • Full medicine name
  • Strength (e.g. 5mg)
  • Medicine Barcode
  • PL number – this will begin with the letters ‘PL’ followed by some numbers (e.g. PL 11/222/11)

(*For your privacy, please hide any personal information from showing in photographs e.g. your name, home address).

We don’t allow medicines to be manually added to help make sure you use the right information about your medicine.

Some medicines can have the same name but are made of different ingredients, depending on who makes them.

Making sure you use the correct information is important to us. It allows us to make sure we can correctly flag any potential interactions with other medicine you take, or any allergies you’ve listed.

You can add a new medicine to your medicine cabinet by following our step-by-step guide below:

  • Select ‘Add’ (‘+ symbol) located at the bottom of your screen.
  • Select ‘Medicine’ from the fan of options (i.e. health condition, medicine, reminder and allergy/intolerance).
  • Place the barcode scanner over the medicine barcode or enter the barcode number.
  • Check the medicine information is correct and appears the same as on the medicine box.
  • Select who the medicine is for (e.g. ‘you’ or ‘someone else’).
  • Input the birth year, gender and postcode area of the person the medicine is for.
  • Customise your medicine cabinet by adding a custom name to the medicine, the health condition the medicine is for and any allergy information.

Trouble finding the barcode?
The barcode might be located under your pharmacy’s dispensing label. If this is the case, carefully lift the label to access the 13-digit barcode.

If you have been prescribed a new medicine by your Healthcare Professional, which replaces an existing medicine you have stored in your medicine cabinet, you can ‘switch’ the medicines by using the delete option in your Medicine Details page.

  • If you are using Medsmart on an iPhone/iPad, you will find the ‘Options’ button in the lower right-hand corner of the screen.
  • If you are using Medsmart on an Android device, the ‘Options’ button is in the top right-hand corner, by tapping on the icon with three dots.

Choose the ‘Switching Medicines’ option and scan the barcode of your new medicine to keep your medicine cabinet up-to-date.

If you have stopped using a medicine, you can either ‘suspend’ or ‘delete’ your medicine completely from your medicine cabinet, depending on your preference. To find out what action works best for you, please take some time to read over the descriptions below:

  • Suspend = If you suspend a medicine, this will mean its’ information will remain stored in your cabinet. If you start using this medicine again, you can resume using the medication without having to re-scan the medicine box again.
  • Delete = If you choose to delete a medicine, its’ information will be permanently removed from your medicine cabinet. You will no longer be able to see, nor be able to access, information stored for this medicine.
  • Click on the medicine you wish to suspend in your medicine cabinet.
  • Select ‘Suspend’.
  • Enter reason for suspending the medicine and confirm.


  • Click on the medicine you wish to delete.
  • Select ‘Delete’ from the options (located on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen).
  • Enter your reason for deleting the medicine and confirm.

To make it easier to remember, you may wish to customise the name on your medicine to something more familiar to you, through the customise settings.

  • If you are using Medsmart on an iPhone/iPad, simply select your medicine and click ‘Edit Custom Name’ from the options (located on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen).
  • If you are using an Android device, select your medicine then click on the navigation icon (three dots) on the top right-hand corner of the screen. Once you have clicked, select ‘Edit Custom Name’ from the options.

Once you have entered the custom name for your medicine, select ‘Confirm’.

Search for Medsmart in the Google Play Store and press the Medsmart button. The page will look like this:

We use any information held about you in the following ways:

  • To help provide you the Medsmart App service
  • To send you push notifications when it’s time to take your medicine (you can change your settings to turn off such notifications at any time although this may impair the functionality of the App)
  • To perform statistical analysis for the creation of anonymised statistical data about medicine usage
  • To maintain, protect and improve Medsmart and to notify you about changes to it.
  • Offline communications between you and the Medsmart team to better engage with you as a user and provide a you with a better user experience;
  • Provide you relevant customer service;
  • Personalise your experience of Medsmart through responding to inquiries or requests
  • Your information helps us to better respond to your individual needs, e.g., we may use your information to serve you more tailored and relevant push notifications based on your interests or usage of the Medsmart App;
  • Send periodic communications and/or periodic personalised communications. If at any time you would like to unsubscribe from receiving future email communications, we include detailed unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of each email.

We ask for your email address to allow us to verify your identity for security reasons and make sure your information is stored correctly under GDPR regulations.

Under GDPR regulations, all companies must make sure all information they store for their customers is correct and can be changed if incorrect. Companies must also make sure all customer information can be suspended or deleted if the customer requests this.

Having your email address helps us reach you if we need to contact you about your information. This also allows us to locate any information we have stored about you and ensure this is updated or deleted at your request.
